Laser technology was discovered in the ‘60s, but nowadays there are thousands of clinical evaluations and over 300 double blind studies that confirm this therapy’s efficacy in various fields such as: dermatology, neurology, surgery, rheumatology, traumatology, orthopedics, gynecology, urology, dentistry and veterinary medicine. Lasers with output power of less than 500 mW do not have a thermal effect during therapy. Laser therapy is a gentle therapy, with no adverse reactions. These types of lasers differ from surgical lasers that coagulate, vaporize and carbonize tissues with a high energy rate – between 3-50W.
Low Level LASER Therapy or LLLT consists of applying laser light on traumatisms, lesions, burns, injuries, painful areas, inflammations and other affections, in order to stimulate the affected tissue’s and cell’s healing abilities. Lasers are well known for their ability to cut, but we shouldn’t mistake healing medical lasers, cold lasers or low energy lasers for high power lasers that cut and are used in surgeries.
Low power lasers are cold, gentle, biostimulators, and consist of light-emitting diodes. They have been used in over 40 years in many countries, as an energetic therapy with favorable biological effects in both animals and humans.
In Europe, Canada and Australia, where the laser treatment is verz well received, is used in inflammatory and chronic traumatisms, as a pain relief method and for healing arthritic lesions, for reducing abscess, in treating wounds that have a long healing period such as bedsores and varicose ulcers, diabetics. This therapy was used to prevent and minimize cheloids appearance, adherences, and to reduce edemas and post surgical pain. This treatment stimulates collagen productivity, the recovery of the injured joint cartilage, nerve, tendons and ligaments recovery. It can also be used to stimulate acupunctural points in a noninvasive and painless way.
How the low power laser works
LLLT (Jan Turner & Lars Hode-Prima Books)
- It reduces pain by releasing endorphins
- Reduces inflammation by suppressing the release of inflammatory enzymes that create the edema, redness and local heat and increases the release of anti-inflammatory enzymes
- Increases lymph drainage that produces an increased circulatory flow and thus spreads the healing process
- Stimulates the release of enzymes that speed the healing process
- Relaxes the contractions of both the skeletal and smooth muscles, contraction that determines chronic pain, joint problems and decreased mobility
- Speeds bone repair by stimulating the proliferation of fibroblasts and osteoblasts
- Using the right frequency, the laser has and antiviral, antifungal and antiherpetic effect
- On a cellular level, the photons are absorbed by the cells; the visible red light is absorbed by the mitochondria and the infrared light by the cellular membrane. This determines membrane permeability modifications, and increases the ATP and DNA production levels. The absorbed photons stabilize the cellular membrane and increase the activity of Na/K – ATP dependant pump, thus increasing the cellular metabolism
- On a tissue level, the laser’s light increases the amount of collagen, facilitates the renewal of epithelium and the production of new capillaries, thus increasing the vascular density
- Reduces inflammation and pain, stimulates nerve renewal, muscular relaxation and increases the immune system’s response
- The fact that the osmosis – the transfer of essential nutrients - cannot be done through a depolarized cell membrane (affected) determines delayed healing, chronic illnesses, scars, fatigue, as well as premature aging.
LLLT reenergizes (repolarizes) the injured cell membrane and increases the mitochondrial energy to 150% (that is the reason why it speeds healing)
The laser’s red light determines ATP increased production on a cellular level, increasement of healthy cellular energy, stimulates cellular multiplication through the normal healing and regeneration process; it also normalizes the abnormal tissues using a series of chemical reactions where many enzymes become active using a domino effect. LLLT has no influence upon healthy tissues. The photons are absorbed only by the needy cells.
The effects of laser therapy and its specifications
- Photobioactivation represents the life’s energy! This term is used for light stimuli that initiate or accelerate the physiological response (wound healing, anti-inflammatory effects, strengthening the immune response, analgesia, improvement of regeneration answer). These effects can be observed in fields such as: dermatology, neurology, surgery, rheumatology, traumatology, orthopedics, gynecology, urology, dentistry and veterinary medicine.
- Photochemical effect – laser’s energy is absorbed by the metabolically active pigments of mitochondria (located in the cutaneous and subcutaneous layers where two enzymes of the oxidative cycle are involved. Citochrom a/a3 and Flavoprotein – they absorb the maximum wavelength applied). The stereochemical structural alterations produce an electromagnetic field that increases and improves ATP concentration up to 200%. Moreover, increased glucose metabolism and oxygen levels can be observed; the main purpose is to balance the Na/K pump action situated within the cellular membrane, another role is to balance protein synthesis (prostaglandins, enzymes) and to significantly increase mitosis.
- It enhances the effects of produced fibroblasts and collagen, thus improving the value of the tissue’s power. Neovascularization – that contains lymphatic and blood vessels – improves microcirculation and lymphatic drainage, the result being edema resorption. This effect is visualized through granular tissue and through the acceleration of wound epithelisation. The same regenerative effect can also be observed when the callus is formed, due to increased osteoblasts activity (in what the heart is concerned, the regeneration consists of muscular tissue adjustment) and through the regeneration of peripheral nerves. After traumatisms, laser therapy prevents the degeneration of the central nervous system and speeds the regeneration of peripheral axons.
- Analgesic effect – the measurable changes of the nervous cell’s membrane potential that lead to hyperpolarization as a good analgesic defense mechanism.
- Improves endorphins release, modifies transmitters’ concentrations on a synaptic level, and determines accumulation of 5 –OH indolacetic (serotonin metabolite) and muscular relaxation by increasing ATP. It reduces the trigger activity involving myofascial pain and fibromyalgia. It activates acupunctural points. This effect is useful in the case of tendonitis, osteoarthritis, synovitis, lesion of soft tissues, fractures, lesions caused by overdoing (such as the syndrome of carpian tunnel, tennis elbow, frozen shoulder, neck tension, tensional headache, lumbago, sciatic pain, vertebral discopathy accompanied by sciatic pain)
- Anti-inflammatory effect - increases NK cell activity, increases lymphatic activity, improves microcirculation, diminished the edema, helps with hematoma resorption, reduces mucus appeared after irradiations and chemotherapy, reduces: decubital and varicose ulcer, diabetic foot, elephantiasis, post-surgical lymphedema. It also reduces the stroke and heart attack area.
- Regenerative effect – stimulates the mitosis rate from the regeneration mechanism for the bone, muscle and nerve; it also diminishes the central nervous system’s degenerative process, strengthens the survival of brain cells after transitory ischemia, accelerates neo-angiogenesis, reduces or eliminates scars, increases collagen synthesis. The effect is visible when healing wounds, fractures, tissues, facial paresis, in post-stroke and post-surgery rehabilitation and when dealing with internal ear problems.
