Once the evaluation has been done and the treatment’s objectives settled, electrodes are placed on the patient’s scalp, along with one or two electrodes on the earlobes. This is done during the actual neurofeedback session.
The patient looks into the computer screen and listens audio tones, sometimes while he/she is reading. These training sessions are meant to teach the person to slowly change and to restimulate the brainwaves pattern.
Through continuous feedback, training and practice, one can maintain a healthy brainwaves pattern. Some people need to learn to increase the brainwaves speed and height in specific areas, while others need to learn how to decrease them.
Neurofeedback trainings vary in length, 15-20 sessions for treating anxiety or insomnia, however for disorders such as ADD/ADHD or learning disabilities, 40-50 sessions are necessary.
A normal session takes between 40 and 60 minutes. When complex and multiple disorders appear, the physician is not able to determine from the start how many sessions will be necessary to complete the treatment.
