This disorder’s frequency of appearance is higher than expected (1,2% - 2,4%) and is often combined with depression, severe deterioration of social skills and work skills. This is the reason why family members and colleagues can be affected by the patient’s condition. As causes of appearance (Hollander 1990), we can name genetic factors (most frequently in monozygotic twins) and neurological (deficits regarding the sensorial and visual-spatial function, smooth movement coordination, involuntary movements). Patients usually have less white matter, but the total cortical and opercular volumes are significantly larger.(Jenike 1996). The symptoms are recognized for their resistance to psychoanalysis and insight centered psychotherapy. Their intensity increases and decreases based on stress presence or absence in the patient’s live. Many people hold on to their symptoms and resist to the treatment, because they think that the amelioration of symptoms can jeopardize their privileged position in family or society. This form of accommodation with the stressful factor leads to the rejection of family and the environment where the individual works, and to a bad treatment management. This accommodation involves an effort to reduce the patient’s anxiety or to manage the anger. Many relatives admit that they are forced to do certain things to integrate the patient’s obsessions and rituals, and that this often leads to relationship problems. |
