Also known as minor TBI, this affection has been less approached by modern medicine, because it consists of time persistent symptoms, meds resistant, without having a concordance between imagery objectivity and interior patient drama. The majority of minor TBI secondary consequences are related to functional alterations that can or cannot be identified with imagery.
Neurofeedback can address successfully to these symptoms that appear in minor TBI, such as: dizziness, irritability, mental confusion, sleep disorders. On a long term basis, neurofeedback can improve the energetic level, and help with vigilance, effort related fatigue, secondary minor TBI cognitive dysfunctions, sensorial hypersensibility, executive function, and recover damaged memory.
Many of these symptoms are known for their spontaneous recovery, but only until 18 month of post-traumatism, period after which the evolution becomes a straight line. Usually, these patients try neurofeedback as a treatment method long after the appearance of CCT.
Among his first studies, Jonathan Walker, a Dallas neurologist (Texas), published results regarding minor TBI on 17 patients with 2-year post-trauma. He followed their recovery in 85% of the cases. The average session number was 32, which is surprising because it isn’t a very high price to pay in order to get rid of these disturbing symptoms.
In the last decades, EEG-Biofeedback techniques have evolved and are now more diverse in approaching minor TBI, with techniques based on pre and post neurofeedback treatment.
Postconcussion syndrome
It is characterized by mental confusion, cognitive dysfunction, sensorial disorders, emotional instability, and sleep disorders. The substrate is functional, of neural network disorganization; that is the reason why neurofeedback will help accelerate the process of regaining the normal and optimal cerebral status.
