THERAPEUTIC APPLICATIONS - AUTISM

          Definition

The American Psychiatric Association defined autism as autism spectrum disorders, that consists of Asperger syndrome, high function autism, wide spread development disorder, or without any specification (PDD-NOS). The word “spectrum” refers to the fact that this disorder manifests differently in two individuals.

          Diagnostic

There are no specific laboratory tests or psychological tests for autism diagnosis. It is based on clinical observation and behavior classification, using a complex and multidisciplinary evaluation. For children aged 18 months to 4 years, diagnosis is temporary, and later it can be established more accurately. This disorder is diagnosed by a psychologist, after the following steps:

  1. Clinical and development anamnesis (or clinical history, is realized in a few sessions, with a well structured interview and qualified medical personnel)
  2. Cognitive function testing (which helps to determine the child’s cognitive abilities and behavior, in order to establish treatment program and strategic management)
  3. Expressive and receptive language evaluation (verbal and non-verbal language evaluation, focus strength and attention modification, reaction to speech, distractibility, language performance)
  4. Behavior observation

Biomedical investigations necessary in order to identify possible autism triggering factors

          Autism causes

Many publications have emphasized the role of genetic determinism (genetic anomalies) that is expressed at the interaction with nutritional deficiencies, which cause cellular structures suboptimal functionality. These suboptimal functionalities can determine multiple disfunctionalities in the body’s systems. Also, the body’s systems can also be affected by environmental toxins, which affect the health and create behavior deficits.

Autism etiology is still vague, however autism can be observed in children with genetic susceptibility and contact with insults. This is the result of a series of dysfunctional interactions between genes and nutrients (nutrigenomic interactions), that can take place either “in the uterus” or after birth. These disfunctionalities usually appear in gastro-intestinal, endocrine, immune and central nervous systems.

A recent study proved that there is a connection between autism an EN2 gene, which contributes in approximately 42% of autism cases, by altering normal brain development. However, the genetic involvement cannot explain the recent increasement of autistic children in the industrialized countries. That is the reason why the genes-nutrients interaction is considered to have a triggering role in autism.

          Behavior Applied Analysis (ABA)

The clinical approach uses behavior interventions in order to modify autistic behavior and to help with the family support, including family training for an aberrant and unwanted behavior management, repetitive auto aggressions, ritualistic, repetitive or aggressive behaviors. The clinical approach teaches autistic children how to learn, how to work, to behave an to adapt in society, how to dress, how to have a daily routine, and it also teaches them an appropriate way of communicating.

All behaviors, either observed or leant, can be divided into three components:

  1. Antecedents, that determine a certain behavior, or what happens before the behavior
  2. The behavior
  3. The consequences, or what happens after the behavior

When a person is acting weird, the behavior’s consequences are not always obvious, and that is the reason why it is very important to identify the element that triggered a certain behavior, or to identify the behavior function. The principles are similar to those of neurofeedback: normal behavior and normal brainwaves’ pattern identification and giving a reward when normal behavior is achieved, in order to repeat it in the future.

Metacognitive techniques are being used – the child learns how to study, to listen, to observe, to reproduce, to ask and to do. Once the child learns and improves his behavior, the structure of the guiding system is systematically reduced, to allow the child independence and to act according to the learnt moral rules.

Afterwards, a modified and more complex environment is created, that involves more people, in order to teach the child a more complex behavior, and the appropriate behavior will be rewarded.

The inappropriate behavior will not be reworded. In the end, a final evaluation will determine the treatment’s progress and if the results are acceptable. This therapy lasts for years and it requires intensive work both from the ABA specialized therapist, and from the parents that have to apply these principles thoroughly.

          Nutritional therapy

This therapy is addressed to people with food sensibilities, cellular malnutrition, intestinal loss, heavy metals toxicity, methylation and other metabolic problems that can aggravate autism and associated symptoms. Through cell membrane alteration and low Omega 3 concentration, the cell becomes vulnerable.

Important nutrients deficiency, such as Zinc, B12 and B6 vitamin, pholat, can interfere with the brain’s development by making vulnerable the cell’s membrane and also by interfering with the cell’s internal processes.

Antigens (foreign toxic material, heavy metals, viruses and bacteria) attack these vulnerable cells and produce lesions. Therefore, these cells cannot continue with their normal function because of the obvious disfunctionalities in the methylation system that is dependant on B6, B12 vitamin and Mg. Therefore, cellular anomalies appear.  Abnormal methylation can interfere with the adjusting protein for Zn/Cu rapport and with other metals from the cell’s membrane. Cellular structure damage determines multisystemic affectation by damaging systems such as gastro-intestinal, immune, endocrine and central nervous systems.

The intestinal bacteria’s fragile balance can be easily affected by antibiotics, food conserving, toxic additives, surrounding toxins, thus leading to intestinal dysbiosis (abnormal bacteria distribution). Opportunistic bacteria from the gastro-intestinal tract can irritate the intestinal wall that is anyway vulnerable, causing irritable colon syndrome, intestinal loss and food sensibility. Some bacteria produce ammonia, and when the quantity becomes too high, a mix of cerebral signals appears, that interfere with the learning process, attention and emotional states.

Autism and folate metabolism – studies conducted for over 20 years suggested that there is a relation between maternal diet and newborn affectation, and therefore consuming oranges, fruits of the forest, bananas, green leaved vegetables, cereal and vegetables, can prevent neural tube defects. Normal brain development is dependant on pholat’s active transport through the hemato-encephalic barrier. Oral treatment with folic acid produces clinical improvemenst in development disorders, including autism.

Why the behavior diversity in autism?

It is now clear that autism is a multifaceted nutrigenomic disorder, with an increased frequency of appearance of 870% in the last 10 years, according to USA Statistic Burro.

This increasement is due to chemical toxins added in the food industry (antibiotics, heavy metals, pesticides, additives and food conserving chemicals).

Food nutrients depletion appears because of soil intensive exploitation every year, the use of chemical fertilizers, food processing methods that destroy nutrients, antibiotics’ excessive use in children, Omega 3 decreasement, oil overheating that produces trans-fatty acids, prolonged cooking methods that destroy vitamins, microwave cooking that destroys vitamins and bioflavonoid.

Neurotherapy (Neurofeedback, EEG-Biofeedback), is a neuroscientific clinical technique that trains abnormal brainwaves with the purpose of changing them and making them normal. Research and clinical trials shows that this approach improves cognitive deficits, concentration, impulsivity control, depression, anxiety and epileptic crisis.

A period of over 35 years of research has confirmed that the excess of slow waves is the most frequent element in the abnormal EEG of children with attention deficit and hyperactivity (ADHD), or learning difficulties. Neurotherapy determines permanent ADHD symptoms regress with more than 80%.

The treatment’s objectives contain a multidisciplinary approach:

  1. Intestinal dysbiosis correction
  2. Balanced diet, with ecological nutrition
  3. Diet supplements, amino acids, Omega 3, micronutrients
  4. QUEEG based neurofeedback, to adjust any EEG anomaly regarding the slow waves/ fast waves rapport
  5. Cognitive-behavior therapy improved with Metacognitive strategies

Neurofeedback mechanism is represented by operant conditioning, that means reconditioning and retraining healthy brainwaves, that leads to increased flexibility and brainwaves production control.

          Neurophysiologic factors and cerebral dysfunction

Chronic behaviors are the result of both the biological predisposition and the environment learnt interactions, which are a part of the neuronal activation patterns. Therefore, the normal brain function can be improved by altering the learnt behavior command, and thus modifying the learnt neuronal activation pattern. With the help of EEG-Biofeedback or neurofeedback, neurophysiologic dysfunctions can be normalized by relearning new behaviors, which include becoming aware or them and trying to change them.

Throughout many decades, this statistical data has been confirmed by multiple researches. They can be applied for ADHD, depression, post-concussion syndrome, ADHD in autism, learning disabilities, TBI, Stroke, post-neurosurgical deficits, therapeutic uncontrolled epilepsy, age associated cognitive dysfunctions, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, schizophrenia, alcoholism, addictive behavior (medication, drugs), attachment disorders (abandonment).

Over 30 years of psychophysiological research sustain the following point of view: a major role in cerebral disfunctionalities with mental disorders as final consequence is played by thalamo-cortical and cortico-cortical oscillation; the information’s transfer moment between various cerebral structures and its alteration, has an overwhelming importance regarding the disfunctionalities mechanism that stand at the base of cerebral malfunctions.

QEEG is a statistical analysis for the brain’s electrical activity, which is recorded on the scalp. In 1988, Dr. E. Roy John published among his research from Brain Research Laboratories, New York University Center, a differential diagnostic for cerebral dysfunctions based on QEEG (neurometric analysis). This differential represented the base of neurofeedback treatment for cerebral dysfunctions.
